New Habits

Had a request for my workout routine so I thought I’d devote a couple of posts to it.

I actually started “working out” almost two years ago. At that point, I didn’t feel like it was realistic to fit the gym into my schedule. Instead, I decided to try and build fitness into my daily routine a little bit at a time.

I started by doing half a dozen pushups and situps each morning. That’s it. If I was really tired I sometimes did as few as 2 or 3 of each. The point was just to make sure I was getting some kind of deliberate exercise every day. I also started looking for ways of adding a bit of exercise to my everyday life. I started taking stairs whenever I could and walking an extra block or two if I had time.

After a few months, I was doing 35-40 pushups and situps as well as 15-20 back arches every morning. I lost about 15 pounds in the first 3 months and it was nice to see a bit of shape in my chest for a change. I also noticed a big change in my waistline. Though I didn’t measure it, I’d guess I dropped 2-3 inches, which made my jeans a heck of a lot more comfortable, if nothing else.

After about 6 months of that routine, I started adding a few simple yoga exercises (left side plank, right side plank & full plank for 30 seconds to a minute per pose). By this point I really felt like exercise had become part of my life. I’d formed a habit.

I’m curious if anybody else has been making positive changes and how they’ve gone about them. Feel free to leave a comment!
